Detailed Description

First we head up north to a valley where Laurel Forest (UNESCO World Heritage Natural Site) covers the mountains with its different types of green, being the habitat of Trocaz Pigeon and Madeira Firecrest. The first walk takes you along a levada for about 30 minutes to get to an amazing view point right in the middle of the central massif of Madeira, over one of the deepest and most beautiful valleys of the Island . Here we set up the scope to look for the Trocaz Pigeon while Chaffinches are around us asking for food. Return is through the same way though the view seems completely different.

Then a ride by van to the third highest peak of Madeira, which is a nice way to rest a bit for the second walk and to observe the Berthelot's pipit. There, at 1810 meters of altitude, if the clouds let you, you have the chance to amaze yourself with a view of almost 60% of the Island.

The second walk is in the Ecological Park of Funchal where you start on a path surrounded by indigenous forest of Madeira with the sounds of Firecrests, Chaffinches, Robins and Grey Wagtails and finish between the exotic flora with the complete landscape of Funchal at your feet with Buzzards and Kestrels flying above.

The ride back to Funchal is through a different way than the way up, arriving in Funchal at 2:30pm. This tour is recommended for everyone who likes to ally walking with sightseeing and nature details as birds, plants and butterflies.

Many thanks for a fascinating and hugely enjoyable day - and you can quote us!  Mark and Christine Burgess, United Kingdom

We finally returned from our cruise on May 3rd and we are slowly getting caught up. But we did want to thank the both of you for a great day in Madeira. Thanks to Hugo, we ended up with 7 lifers plus several Cory's Shearwaters as we left Madeira. And endemic species are always fun to see and we also enjoyed the spectacular scenery. (...) Anyway, I wanted to thank you and we will certainly book a tour with you if we ever are in the area again. We certainly would like to see those other shearwaters that next in your area. And it goes without saying that if we know of anyone else that will be be Madeira and are interested in birds or just the environment, we will recommend you to them.  Laura & Wayne, United States of America
