Selvagens Islands Boat Expedition

Selvagens are a group of small Portuguese islands lying in the Atlantic Ocean at 30º08´N and 15º54´W distancing around 152 nautical miles South from Madeira and 87 miles North from Canary Islands.

Main islands are Selvagem Grande, Selvagem Pequena and Ilhéu de Fora with a total area of nearly 2,7 square kilometers but there are several other islets or rocks surrounding these which difficult navigation around. The history of this Madeira sub-archipelago includes several international ships which crashed these islets and sunk. Some books even mention hidden treasures left there! The only treasure we found so far is the huge colony of sea birds breeding on these small pieces of land.

On these remote islands one may find unique worlds, each with its own characteristics. As Charles Darwin described Galapagos Islands "a small world inside the world" Selvagens Islands can also be described like that. These extraordinary Islands host an important ecosystem with valuable dynamic relations between living creatures and its habitats. An example of this is the endemic plant of Ilhéu de Fora, Euphorbia obtusifolia desfoliata, a species of Spurge which has its own endemic beetle, which lives exclusively on this plant.

There are not enough words to describe the amazing feeling of being at Selvagens, especially at night when all seabirds return to their nests…This is the most nature rewarding scene one can ever experience!

This 5 days sea trip aims to show you not only one of the most relaxing places in the world but also several species of seabirds as White-faced storm petrel, Madeira-storm petrel, Bulwer's petrel, Cory shearwaters, Roseate terns, between others but also endemic plants such as Selvagens Sea-Lavender and Selvagem Pequena Crysanthemum and also the Selvagens Gecko which can only be found in Selvagem Grande.
