Madeira Island Ultra-Trail

Madeira Island Ultra-Trail

It is already next weekend, from the 26th to the 28th of April 2019 that the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail (MIUT) is held between Porto Moniz and Machico. This is a competition event where athletes run along trails, paths, levadas and some old ways, up and down the mountains of Madeira. There are 4 different races with different distances, being the longest one the MIUT with 115 km where there are 1000 registered athletes, then the ULTRA race with a distance of 85 km and 500 runners, the MARATHON which enrolls 650 trail runners is 42 km and finally the MINI race with only 16 km and 450 participants. The MIUT race starts Saturday at midnight downtown Porto Moniz and the first hours of the day are spent up and down the Northwest side of the island, between Porto Moniz and Encumeada. This race has a time limit of 32 hours, so the last athlete must arrive before 8:00 am of Sunday. The ULTRA athletes depart from the centre of the village of São Vicente at 7:00 am. It follows the MINI race with departure downtown Porto da Cruz at 9:00 am and the last race to start is the MARATHON at 11:00 am from Monte. All races have their finishing line in Machico, by the beach. Wind Birds is a media partner on this event, providing the live broadcast at the finishing line and a telegram bot where the public may follow the athlete’s times at each control point. For this you just need to download the app Telegram and join @miutbot Important notice: this event gathers a couple of thousand athletes and for safety reasons we recommend people who are not running this race to avoid some of the popular Madeira walks during Saturday 27th of April 2019 as some are quite narrow and it may not be safe to encounter competing athletes on these trails. So, please check the list of walks to avoid on Saturday 27th of April 2019:
